Sidewiki: New web commenting tool from Google04 October, 2009
|By Allison Orr|
Google has launched a new tool which allows notes and comment to be posted beside any webpage for others to read. Google Sidewiki appears as a browser sidebar and allows you to write entries along the side of the page and displays messages from other users about the content of the page. According to Google, you can now “add your own insights for others who are passing through”.
Google says in its official blog that they have developed an algorithm that promotes the “most useful, high-quality entries” rather than just showing the most recent entries first. It will also bring in relevant posts from blogs and other sources that talk about the current page. Despite, the name, the tool does not function like a wiki, so you cannot edit comments made by others. It is a comment thread.
Sidewiki is a feature of Google Toolbar and can be downloaded at google.com/sidewiki
