The Government has announced that Mike Quigley, CEO of Alcatel, will be the Executive Chairman of the National Broadband Network company (NBNCo).  Mr Quigley will commence the role immediately to direct work on the NBN Implementation Study.  The Government is expected to announce the lead advisor for the study this week and a full report is due by February 2010.

Minister for Communications, Stephen Conroy, had originally set the deadline of the end of July to announce the remaining board members and other details. however the Government is still in the process of appointing the other directors.  The board, when appointed, will select the location of the NBNCo’s headquarters, so the choice of remaining board members is critical for those states hoping to host the company.

The fibre-to-the-home NBN project will begin in Tasmania in August, with 5,000 homes and businesses to be wired by the end of the year.
