Updated Internet statistics

18 December, 2008
By Allison Orr

According to the latest information from Internet World Stats (IWS), the total number of Internet users in the world is just over a billion and a half, representing a global penetration rate of 22.5 per cent.

The greatest number of Internet users are still in Asia, with nearly 600 million users, but penetration rates are still highest in the US, Australia and Europe.

While all regions showed growth in Internet usage (an average global growth rate of 14 per cent), the growth rates vary across regions.  As would be expected, countries like Australia and the US showed slower growth rates, as the number of users was already very high.

The highest yearly growth rate for 2007-2008 comes from regions where Internet usage is rising more significantly from a lower base – South America, the Middle East and Central America.

Australia has nearly 16.5 million Internet users, representing a penetration rate of just on 80 per cent, one of the highest in the world.

IWS has also recently created a new blog, Internet Stats Today, that will feature Internet news and statistics updates.
