Inspired by the UK’s TheyWorkForYou, a group of volunteers has put together "quite possibly the best thing to happen online for democracy in Australia this year" – OpenAustralia.org.
This website puts Hansard online and makes it searchable and allows you to look up your Federal representative and find their recent speeches in parliament, issues they’ve been involved in and debates they’ve spoken in. You can also get statistics on their work.
Say the site’s creators: "We aim to help bridge this growing democratic disconnect, in the belief that there is little wrong with Parliament that a healthy mixture of transparency and public engagement won't fix."
The website is based on open-source principles and all the source code is freely available for the technically minded to get involved. You can also follow discussions and updates to the site at the OpenAustralia.org blog.
