'Cybernauts' for Obama21 August, 2008
|By Allison Orr|
The Obama campaign has launched a team of "cybernauts" who will supply rapid responses to Internet rumours, according to an article in The Times.
Chain emails and blog sites have made claims that Obama is a Muslim, sympathises with radical Palestinians, or was sworn in as a senator on the Koran. The Internet team will track and respond to these claims in an attempt to minimise any damage they may do to his bid for the presidency. Doubts about his patriotism and suspicions over his background are believed to have been significant in his low polling with white blue-collar workers in the US.
The Internet "war room" will focus exclusively on the online smear campaign and respond immediately when inaccurate information is put out.
