After years of discussion and testing, the policy decisions with regard to new generic top-level domains (gTLDs( have been arrived at by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and agreed upon by the Generic Names Supporting Organisation (GNSO). The project has now moved into the implementation phase.
This issue is likely to be the dominant issue for ICANN over the next two years.
The full policy documents can be seen on the GSNO website, Part A and Part B. The ICANN website keeps updated information on the New gTLD Program.
