A YouTube Election Debate for Australia?

19 September, 2007

The Labor Party is calling for a series of leaders' debates in the lead up to the Federal Election, one of which they propose to take place on YouTube.

ALP National Secretary, Tim Gartrell wrote to Liberal Federal Director Brian Loughnane, calling for at least three debates to be held on Sundays leading up to the election.  Mr Gartrell proposes that all debates be webcast live, with at least one involving online participation through a site such as YouTube.  It is not known at this stage whether Mr Howard will agree to participate in such a format.

The Government has not yet set a date for the election, but Prime Minister Howard is expected to call the election soon.

YouTube has already co-hosted a political debate in the US, with the Democrat presidential candidates.
